Will a rear box fit your vehicle?
Our rear boxes require a tow bar with sufficient nose weight. You can check whether your vehicle is suitable before booking using our nose weight calculator. If you are unsure, we are happy to help.

We rent rear cargo boxes for the tow hitch in three sizes: 300, 400 and 450 litres. Pickup in Darmstadt, Steinstraße 16. We mount the box onto the hitch and walk you through the handling.
Rear box or roof box – which makes sense when?
- Rear box – when the roof should stay free, when the available roof load matters, for back-friendly loading, or when you don't have roof bars. For EVs the extra box sits aerodynamically at the rear instead of on the roof.
- Roof box – if you don't have a tow hitch, if you need to transport items longer than 225 cm, or when carrier and box would both be at the rear (then put the box on the roof).
Required: your car needs a tow hitch and a trailing number plate (both bookable as accessories).
Frequently asked questions
Do I need a tow hitch for a rear box?
Yes, a tow hitch is absolutely required. Rear boxes are mounted on a carrier system that attaches directly to the vehicle's tow hitch. Without a tow hitch, using a rear box is not possible.
What should I consider?
- Permissible tow hitch load (the maximum weight the hitch can support).
- A duplicate license plate is required. You can add this as an accessory when booking.
- Country-specific regulations: Depending on your travel destination, a warning sign may be required (e.g., in Italy and Spain). This can be rented as an accessory.
If your vehicle does not have a tow hitch, retrofitting may be a practical option.
Can I use my existing license plate?
No, the vehicle's original license plate may not simply be attached to the bicycle carrier or rear box. A duplicate license plate must be used, which carries the same combination as the original license plate but is issued without registration and inspection stickers.
How much can I load into the rear cargo box?
All three rear cargo boxes in our range may be loaded with a maximum of 50 kg. You also need to allow for the permitted nose weight of your tow bar, because the weight of the whole system counts towards it. Can I use a rear cargo box and a bike carrier at the same time?
No. We do not offer a rear cargo box and a bike carrier on the tow bar at the same time. If you need to carry bikes and extra luggage, you can combine a bike carrier at the rear with a roof box on the roof.
